United States Morgan Silver Dollars 1878 - 1921
Philadelphia Mint
Since the opening of the
country's first mint at Philadelphia in 1793, United States coins
have at one time or another been minted
in seven other cities, each of which had been assigned a
distinctive mint mark. Only the mother mint at Philadelphia
distinguished her issues through the absence of a mint mark.
The Peak of the Engravers Art
The beautiful Morgan Silver Dollar was sculpted by George T.
Morgan, in 1876, and is considered by experts to be the peak of the engraver's art. The obverse bears the regal head of Liberty and
the reverse is a striking design incorporating the
majestic American eagle within a wreath. These high relief coins bear his signature on both sides of each coin, the only regular issue
coin in United States history to bear the sculptor's signature
on both sides.
Millions of Silver Dollars Melted Down
Minting of these historic coins started in 1873 with the passage
of the Bland-Allisan Act and were produced in the Philadelphia
Mint until 1921. Massive meltdowns of Morgan Silver dollars in
the 20th Century and their popularity with collectors
and investors have
reduced the supply of these coins
drastically.
